NEWBURYPORT, Mass. - Nov. 12, 2014 - PRLog -- We are living in a time where hundreds of thousands of service members are transitioning to civilian life. Many are transitioning with unrealistic expectations of what life may be like in the civilian world.

• Did you know that returning veterans are almost 50% more likely to be unemployed than a person who never served? And EVERY 80 MINUTES in our country a veteran who unfortunately cannot transition commits suicide – that is an alarming rate of 22 a day!

The GallantFew.org (http://www.gallantfew.org/) wants to eliminate veteran isolation. Their goal is to connect every new veteran with a hometown veteran mentor with the opportunity to achieve a smooth, peaceful and successful transition, thereby preventing veteran unemployment, homelessness and suicide. Since founding in 2010, they have provided direct assistance to over 1,000 veterans and have grown the volunteer base to over 4,000 including Cory Smith.

In 2013, 3rd Ranger Battalion combat veteran Cory Smith, experienced the death of his friends who were killed and wounded in combat while his own marriage began to fail. Smith decided to highlight the difficult journey home many soldiers have leaving the Army by undergoing a very public and very difficult journey home himself.

Cory decided to run home – from his base in Columbus, GA to his home in Indianapolis, IN – 565 miles in 28 days! Holding his daughter Elleigh in his arms was the end goal of his run.

This singular decision inspired Gallantfew.org to create Run Ranger Run, a yearly event taking place in February where teams of up to ten individuals pledge to walk, run and/or ride bicycles a combined total of 565 miles. In the process they raise funds for GallantFew while increasing awareness for the veteran transition issues.
