Sept. 29, 2014 - PRLog -- CALABASAS, Calif. — If you suffer from sleep apnea, health experts recommend to get treatment before going in for surgery.

According to a new study, getting screened and treated for obstructive sleep apnea before surgery may reduce risk of cardiovascular complications by more than half, USNews.com reports.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where patients stop breathing several times a night because their airway passages narrow, become blocked or collapse.

The study examined more than 4,200 patients who were diagnosed with sleep apnea either before or after they had surgery and a group that did not have sleep apnea. Researchers treated sleep apnea patients with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine before surgery.

The study, which appears in the October issue of the journal of Anesthesiology, found that patients who received treatment for their sleep apnea were less than half as likely to develop such complications as cardiac arrest, or shock, when compared to those who underwent surgery without getting treatment.

Leading dental expert, Dr. Greg Rubin, who has successfully helped hundreds of patients get control of their sleep apnea at his Calabasas Dental Institute sleep center, says many people who have sleep apnea can greatly benefit from a custom-made oral appliance, which helps open the airwaves in the throat by repositioning the lower jaw.

Snoring is one of the first indicators of sleep apnea and if left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to more serious health problems, such as hypertension, drowsiness, weight gain, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

“I’ve treated many patients who suffered for years from fatigue, drowsiness, depression and overall unhappiness, only to find out that a simple oral appliance was able to dramatically change and improve their quality of life,” Dr. Greg Rubin said.

“They come back to me feeling revived, motivated, full of energy and most importantly, happy. It’s a remarkable difference,” he said.

There are nearly 200 different oral devices that can be used to treat Obstructive sleep apnea and studies suggest that 2/3 of sleep apnea cases can be treated with dental appliances.

If you would like more information, Dr. Greg Rubin has developed and operates a consumer hotline — (310)-I-SNORE- or (310) 476-6732 — that will take you through all the steps from a free evaluation to diagnosis and treatment.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, nearly 18 million people in the U.S. suffer from sleep apnea.
