PETERSBURG, Ind. - Aug. 11, 2014 - PRLog -- In late July, Carpenters Local 224 of the Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters (IKORCC) volunteered to build a ramp and deck for Robert Stephan, who suffered a head injury after being in an accident.

Robert and his father Mike Stephan were selling fund-raising candy bars door to door when Robert was struck by a car. “Since the accident occurred, Robert has been confined to a wheelchair. We are able to get him in and out of the house through the front entrance, but the porch is very small and faces a busy highway,” said Mike Stephan. “What we really wanted was a deck and access ramp built in our back yard so we could take Robert outside and spend time together. Without hesitation, the Carpenters Union offered to build the deck and ramp for us. They are a professional and compassionate group of people, and we really appreciate the hard work they put into doing something really meaningful for my family.”

After hearing about the story, members of Carpenters Local 224 and Sterling Boiler & Mechanical (specialty contractors located in Evansville) were inspired to help. The time and skills it took to build the deck and ramp were donated by Local 224, and the materials were a donation from Sterling Boiler & Mechanical.

“When we heard about what happened to Robert, we immediately wanted to do whatever we could to assist him and his family,” said Marvin Byrer, IKORCC Representative. “Serving the community is at the heart of IKORCC, and it truly shows in the volunteer service of each of the carpenters who helped out with this project.”

The Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters represents more than 32,000 professional tradespeople in 43 locals in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and parts of West Virginia and Tennessee. A proud affiliate of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, which has a century-plus tradition of representing the best of the building trades, the council works in partnership with more than 30,000 contractors, helping them find the best possible talent for their projects. The hallmark of the regional council is three-fold: training, professionalism and partnerships for economic development.
