How to Organise your Cleaning and Maintenance Schedule

EXETER, U.K. - July 10, 2014 - PRLog -- When you’re on a busy schedule, cleaning and home maintainance can often slip down the list of priorities. When it’s all work, eat, sleep, repeat, it can be difficult to fit a regular clean in to your day. However, to maintain your health and happiness, keeping your home a hygienic and pleasant environment is essential. Luckily, with a little forward-planning and organisation, cleaning and maintaining your house can be a much easier task which in turn will add more value to your home.

Write a rota

One of the easiest ways to organise your cleaning and home maintenace schedule is with a rota. This can be just for yourself or for everyone in the house to share. Creating a table of the jobs that need doing each week to keep your home clean and in full working order is an effective way of tracking what you need to do and ticking off completed jobs throughout the week. Regular cleans and checks makes the process of cleaning itself much quicker and easier, so making a list of jobs that need doing regularly is a good time-saving technique.

Stick this to a kitchen wall or somewhere everyone in your family often looks - for example, the fridge - and write in bright colours to keep on top of your household tasks. It’s often easy to intend to do a job and then simply forget throughout a busy day, and one of the best ways of reminding yourself and others that tasks need doing is by displaying the information in an eye-catching way where is will be seen multiple times a day. You could even move the location each week to keep housemates or family members on their toes!

Cleaning apps to change your life

Nowadays there is an app for everything, and that includes cleaning. A number of phone and computer applications have been released to make home cleaning a stress-free process. If you have created a rota and want everyone in your household to get more involved in cleaning, Chorma enables you to make a list of chores and assign them to those living with you, on which you can check up.

Home Routines is a great little app that divides your home into ‘zones’ and gives you tips on concentrating on one zone for 15 minutes each day in order to get those cleaning jobs done that often fall under the radar.

If you’re an advocate of environmentally-friendly living, then Green Shine is for you. It offers over 100 cleaning tips for ‘green’ cleaning that protects the environment whilst keeping your family healthy and home clean.

BrightNest allows you to organise your home cleaning chores into personalised projects based on your lifestyle and cleaning goals. It also provides information on maintenance based on your local climate and surprising tips such as using left over tea bags as cleaning agents!

These apps are brilliant tools for keeping track of your cleaning jobs in a world where the only thing guaranteed to be with you at all times is usually your mobile phone! These apps are especially useful if you are planning to make major changes in your home like a loft conversion or building extension.

Organising your supplies

Famous pop singer Jessie J once said that she has made a polaroid book full of every cleaning product she owns, numbered, so she can ensure she has everything she needs. Whilst we’re not suggesting this level of organisation is necessary for everyone, keeping your supplies ordered and neat makes cleaning a lot more straightforward.

First, find a suitable space to store your products - ideally a lockable cupboard if you have kids. Then, get two coloured bags - one for clean cloths and the other for those that need washing, and hang them on a hook. You can even colour-code cloths for separate rooms to you don’t transfer germs. Separate products for different rooms or purposes, such as surfaces, floors, windows and so on, and place them in separate boxes or even buckets for extra functionality. It is also a good idea to store dangerous chemicals separately and high up, with a sign on the storage box. You could even use crates with separate compartments to prevent having to root around to products when you’re doing a quick clean. Organise your tools and maintainence gear in much the same way.

Another little trick is to glue a couple of clothespins to the inside on the cupboard door and clip the fingers of your rubber gloves to them. This allows the gloves to dry properly and keep your skin healthy when you clean. If you have a full-height cupboard such as one under the stairs, you could mount broom and mop handles to the back of the door to stop them falling over and knocking other supplies.

If you really love being able to know what you need immediately, you can even label every draw or box in your cupboard with ‘tools’, ‘spares’ and so on, and a list of products inside!
