Planning and Management of Megaprojects – is it any different?
Call for papers on project management for large multi-billion dollar programs and projects
Prof Flyvbjerg goes on to quote The McKinsey Global Institute (2013) which “estimates global infrastructure spending will be US$3.4 trillion per year between 2013 and 2030” and The Economist: “infrastructure spending in emerging economies at US$2.2 trillion annually for the period 2009-2018”. Including fields other than infrastructure such as oil and gas, mining, aerospace, defense, ICT, mega events and others, Flyvbjerg predicts the global megaproject market at between US$6 and US$9 trillion per year, or approximately 8% of total global GDP. 
Can the various international project management bodies of knowledge, standards and professional practices handle such massive projects? Or is an entire new body of knowledge needed that can be embraced by financial, industrial and governmental organizations and executives? Project management experts, researchers and those working on megaprojects are invited to submit an article or paper on megaproject management for publication in the PMWJ.
According to Managing Editor David Pells, “I have read again recently that 90+% of megaprojects fail to meet cost, schedule or performance objectives. This is even worse than the dismal record for information systems and technology projects. What is so different about really big projects? If you have knowledge and experience in this area, please share with the rest of us.”

“The World Bank estimates the need for several trillion dollars just for infrastructure projects in Africa over the next few years,” Pells adds. “If most large projects are currently doomed for failure, then there is a great need to mobilize more knowledge and expertise related to planning and managing these huge efforts.”
