Saint Monica University Joins Global Universities in Distance Education

BUEA, Cameroon - June 19, 2014 - PRLog -- Saint Monica University (SMU): The American International University today announced that it has joined the Global Universities In Distance Education (GUIDE) Association. As a global provider of online education, SMU hopes to contribute to GUIDE’s innovative research while learning from the association’s best practices in distance education.

“Saint Monica University is pleased join the GUIDE Association, which is a prestigious group of universities with online programs,” said Professor Januarius Jingwa (JJ) Asongu, President and Chief Executive Officer of SMU. “We fully identify with GUIDE’s mission, which is to promote excellence in research, development and use of e-learning by providing networking and exchange opportunities among universities and educational institutions, funding agencies, public and private bodies and the business sector.”

The GUIDE Association was founded in 2005 by Marconi University in Italy with the aim to develop and support international cooperation and open and distance learning worldwide. By strengthening the role of higher education institutions as innovation and development drivers, GUIDE promotes the implementation of innovative results, insights and best practices in order to identify present, emergent and future needs of regional and international stakeholders and highlight potential areas for strategic partnership and transnational cooperation.

“SMU has a growing online program and we hope to benefit from our membership of GUIDE,” said Mr. Peter Chin Nyuyse, Director of Online Education at SMU. “The Association disseminates the results of researches about the latest trends in online education and digital technologies application, also sharing and promoting e-learning policies, procedures and practices. SMU is the only Cameroonian institution of higher education to be admitted into GUIDE and joins about a dozen other African universities in this about 120 member association.”

SMU has a well developed online learning system called SMU Virtual Learning Platform, built on the open source platform called Moodle. The university currently attracts students from 13 different countries in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
