In a nutshell it is an upper garment typically a long loose tunic top generally called Kurta for men or kurti for women.

It is made simply from a rectangular cloth cotton or otherwise with a rectangular almost straight cut in front and back with straight sleeves.  Today,  kurtis are tunic tops - pieces of designer elegance and are richly embellished.
