Doyle peels back the mythical Unicorn skin by presenting heretic Duke Hudson, a powerful male trouble-maker, slacker, haranguer, wanderer, juicer, and an explosively violent figure formed of a schizophrenic mind.

Hudson dictates severe teaching moments to combat the opposing forces of a conforming, textbook society. Alternately, he is the evil twin of parent, teacher, coach, and boss tasked with structuring and enforcing rules of the community. Mostly, he rages and screams for unbridled latitude, delirious and intrusive upon the novel’s main character, a young man whose mental tailspin is fueled by substantial drug and alcohol consumption.

E. J. Doyle intimately acquaints the reader to the substance abuse world by introducing an ever-expanding troop of users from a vast quarry of untamed yearlings poised for chemical slaughter. Their youthful bravado is tested along roads where life is promisingly free of rules, obligations, and unfulfilling work; and where the costs of consumption of hard liquor, oxycodone, hashish, cocaine, heroin, morphine and other stimulants are steep: addiction, overdose, sickness, and destitution.
