Dallas was the show business capital of Texas and much of the South throughout the 20th century. More than 100 theatres served the city’s neighborhoods and Elm Street once boasted more than 15 vaudeville and movie theatres—second in number to Broadway. Historic Dallas Theaters celebrates the area’s rich cinematic history by displaying many never before published vintage images that chronicle the industry from 1859 to the present. Vintage photographs show how the quality of the show houses in Dallas were surpassed by few cities and all major, and most minor, Hollywood studios maintained Dallas offices. Anecdotes also highlight notable names including Margo Jones, “Blind” Lemon Jefferson, Bob Hope, Greer Garson, Linda Darnell, Howard Hughes, Gene Autry, Oliver Stone, Pappy Dolson, Jack Ruby, Lee Harvey Oswald, Don Henley and Frank Lloyd Wright-to name a few. Author D. Troy Sherrod is a fourth-generation Dallasite, with show business roots dating back to the vaudeville era. With showbiz in his blood, he has meticulously researched Dallas theaters for over 40 years. Sherrod states, “I want my potential readers to see my book and say ‘I remember that place!’ I want them to see other images and say ‘I never realized something like that ever existed here—I wonder what it must have been like back then.’ This is how history buffs and future historians are created.” Highlights of Historic Dallas Theatres include: •A chapter on adult theatres and burlesque. •Information on segregated theatres of the past. •Addresses the seedy side of the movie industry. •Includes details on conn.ections between Dallas theatres and many notable figures.
