Coloplast Employee Of The Year Joins The Jet Set
John Pelan, a long-serving employee of Peterborough-based medical devices company Coloplast, will be jetting off to Antigua later this year on an all expenses paid holiday – his prize for being named the company’s ‘employee of the
Coloplast manufactures products which make life easier for people with intimate health care problems. IT expert John works primarily within the company’s ostomy division, where he has developed a patient management system named MIME to help manage the care of people who have had major bowel surgery. The system is in use in more than 70 hospitals across the UK.
As well as continuing with the development and management of MIME through 2013, John also took on the development of software for the company’s continence division.
The new web-based system allows users of products such as catheters and sheaths to order products through their local specialist continence team without needing to visit their GP surgery to obtain a prescription – yet, at the same time, it allows the GPs and other medical professionals involved in patients’ care to monitor their use of product. The system, named ProACT Manager, helps to ensure patients are getting the right products at the right time to help with their condition. It also automatically highlights for doctors and nurses any unusual patterns of use which may indicate a need for additional treatment or support.
John said: “It has been a demanding year – trying to keep ’several plates spinning’ at the same time, continuing work on MIME while also developing ProACT Manager.
“It has been very satisfying to be able to achieve success with both of these projects, knowing we are making a real difference to people’s lives while also helping the National Health Service to enhance quality of care and control costs.
“It was a huge surprise to be named as ‘employee of the year’. I was delighted.”
John was presented with a trophy by Coloplast general manager Sue Kernahan.
Sue said: “2013 was another great year for Coloplast thanks to people like John. I was delighted to be able to recognise the special contribution John has made to the company while congratulating all the team on the hard work that has enabled us to continue to grow the business.
“It has been exciting to see that work coming to fruition with good financial results, award-winning new products being launched, new jobs created and new technology such as the systems that John has developed allowing us to serve our customers in new ways. We are in a strong position to build on this success in 2014.”
