Cambridge is home to fourth most inspiring independent jeweller in the UK

This also makes it the most inspiring independent in Cambridge.

The bespoke jeweller, owned by its eponymous founder Harriet Kelsall, is number 4 in Retail Jeweller’s 2013 list of Inspiring Independents, published last week.

In the last few years Harriet has transformed both of her jewellery studios, with the re-design of the Cambridge store winning Business Initiative of the Year in the 2011 UK Jewellery Awards for the new concept of bringing bespoke jewellery design to the High Street.

Earlier this year a second UK Jewellery Award followed with Harriet Kelsall winning Boutique Retailer of the Year 2013.

Harriet, who opened her jewellery studio in Cambridge in 2004, said: “We are absolutely delighted that we are number 4 in Retail Jeweller’s list of Inspiring Independents. Every year we await the list with huge excitement to see where we are placed and also where the rest of the jewellery industry is but we never expected for one minute to be so high up!

“It’s a considerable achievement as there are so many fantastic independent jewellers in the UK and to be named the most inspiring in Cambridge and also Hertfordshire, as well as fourth nationwide, is just incredible. I’m so proud of the whole team, we’ll definitely be celebrating as it’s topped off a very successful year for us.”

Every year, Retail Jeweller publishes a list of the top 50 Inspiring Independents in the UK. Commenting on Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery and why they ranked them number 4, they said: “This is a truly unique business model. Kelsall decided to see if she could bring the ‘Savile Row’ tailor aesthetic to the jewellery industry and make the entire business about bespoke.

The recent renovations in rural Hertfordshire saw the converted barn become a one-stop jewellery centre complete with jewellery making classes, customer coffee shop, gemstone displays and jewellery-themed garden, as well as dedicated areas for bespoke consultations.   As a result it’s become as much a destination for Cambridgeshire customers as their town centre studio in Green Street.

As well as bespoke design, both studios also offer a range of ready-to-wear jewellery, all one-off designs created by the in-house team.

Harriet Kelsall is recognised as an expert in bespoke jewellery as well as being passionate about ethics in the jewellery industry. In 2011, the company was one of the first 20 in the UK to be licensed to work in Fairtrade Gold and was the first independent company in the UK to be certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council.
