Elsevier Library Connect Seminar in Pune

PUNE, India - Nov. 20, 2013 - PRLog -- The world’s leading provider of information related to science and heath, Elsevier, had organised the “Library Connect Seminar” in Pune at the Courtyard Marriot Hotel on 12th November, 2013.Pune has been the seat for engineering and technical education institutes in Maharashtra with the presence of more than 40 technical education institutes. Therefore it does not come as a surprise that the city was chosen to host the seminar primarily meant for technical education institutes.

The seminar witnessed participation from more than 40 librarians and information officers from various All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) approved institutes in the region. The event also saw participation from reputed institutes of Maharashtra like the Sinhagad College of Engineering. The seminar provided an opportunity for Elsevier colleagues, librarians and information officers to collaborate and share their knowledge and best practices.

The much awaited event began at about 10:30 am with the traditional meet and greet session. The dignitaries and guests welcomed each other. The first session of the day began with an introduction to Elsevier and the support extended by it in user adoption and training customers. The Customer Development Manager for South Asia, Mr Manish Uniyal, discussed Elsevier’s presence in the region, the customised packages offered by them and the support rendered in training customers.

Elsevier’s global presence and the company’s collaboration in India with leading academic institutes, universities, government and corporations was well addressed by Ms Adeline Yap Kuhendran, the Director of Sales, Asia-Pacific. She spoke at length about Elsevier’s working relationship with AICTE for the last four years and its current association with the apex body for improving the quality of technical education in the country. She brought out the survey results that demonstrated how small academic institutions in the US and UK benefited from using scientific information and how it added value to the academic qualifications.

The Director of College of Pharmacy from Sinhgad Technical education Society, Dr Kishor Gujar, one of the guest speakers at the seminar, stressed on the importance of e-resources in changing the Indian technical education system and how it improved the critical thinking and analytical skills needed for employment.

The company’s Regional Product Sales Manager Mr Han Jit Kwang, flew in from Singapore to attend the event. On the occasion, he showcased Elsevier’s online book library for AICTE institutions, which was a recent addition to the bouquet of products provided by the company to the leading technical education body.

In 2012, the company had initiated its support to the AICTE approved institutes to provide easy and subsidised access to Scieverse Science Direct. Science Direct is a leading full-text scientific database that offers journal articles and chapters from more than 2500 peer-reviewed journals and more than 19000 books. The package had a sophisticated search and retrieval functionality that helped users to discover the right content relevant to their research requirements.

The last speaker of the day, Mr Rajeev Kumar, trainer for the South Asian region, gave a detailed presentation, explaining the features and functionalities of Sciverse Science Direct.

The event closed with distribution of the certificate of appreciation to the company’s customers at 1.10 pm. This was followed by lunch arranged for all the guests and dignitaries.
