Cerritos College Plastic Students Get Sneak Peak at Vision SZR Prototype

Students in the composite fabrication class at Cerritos College got the chance to see a prototype of the Vision SZR. The car was built by Vision Industries and was brought to Cerritos College to demonstrate how composites are used in the real world.

NORWALK, Calif. - Nov. 21, 2013 - PRLog -- Composites are objects that are formed by combining materials together to create a superior material. The new object is usually lighter, less expensive, and stronger than the individual materials. Composites have been used in automotive technology, aerospace technology, and construction.

The Vision SZR was partially built from composites. The body and chassis of the car were made out of the same composites that the class is learning how to use. Students in the composite fabrication class are learning how to work with materials by building clipboards, surfboards, and other objects.

“The industry is looking for problem solvers and team players right now,” said Terry Price, Plastics Instructor. “Our students know the technology, understand the terminology, and understand how to handle these materials properly. Our program gives them the basic skills to succeed in the field and they are being hired.”

The Cerritos College Plastics Manufacturing Department (PMT) was established in 1974 and designed to provide a state-of-the-art plastics manufacturing technology program for students intending to work in commercial manufacturing companies. The PMT department specializes in training and re-training in industries and specializations that include: Aerospace, aircraft manufacturing, aircraft repair, automotive, civil engineering, medical products, Marine, sporting goods, quality, nondestructive testing and electrical.

Cerritos College Plastics Department’s mission is to offer technical training with a focus on high-tech equipment, hands-on training, and low college tuition for students. The department is the only public institution in the State of California offering a full Degree Program in Composites and Manufacturing with related classes in both thermoset and thermoplastics. The Composites program curriculum includes: Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics (FRP), gel coating and laminating, Resin Transfer Molding (RTM), vacuum bagging, infusion processes, testing and evaluation, tooling and mold construction. The Plastics program offers curriculum in thermoplastic processing processes, identification, and recycling.
