New E-Book Highlights Human Activities That Trigger Earthquakes

The editor of Catastrophe Map.org has compiled scientific reports that confirm earthquakes have been triggered by actions associated with hydraulic fracking, mega-dam construction, large-scale mining, and drilling for oil, gas, and geothermal energy.

CHICAGO - Nov. 2, 2013 - PRLog -- A new e-book “Catastrophe Map Reports: Human Induced Earthquakes” presents scientific facts that show why it’s not irrational to believe that humans have the technological power to cause destructive seismic activity in our Earth’s crust.

Although we have been taught that earthquakes are a force of nature, CatastropheMap.org editor Sean O’Leary points out that humans have developed technology to excavate canyons, flatten mountains, and destroy cities in a fraction of the time it would take nature to do the job: “In spite of these clear realities, the notion that humans cause earthquakes still surprises many people. While most quakes are natural, it is well within our ever-swelling destructive potential to trigger them.”

Although it is difficult to prove that any single earthquake was caused solely by human activities, O’Leary has accumulated powerful evidence that humans can trigger earthquakes through actions related to our quest for energy, resources, food, and power.  The book analyzes dozens of scientific reports concluding that earthquakes have been triggered by activities such as:

·         underground hydrocarbon wastewater storage wells

·         groundwater removal

·         building mega-dams for hydroelectric power

·         large-scale mining and quarrying

·         large-scale drilling for geothermal energy

·         detonating nuclear devices underground

“Human Induced Earthquakes” documents instances in which human activity has produced earthquakes in areas without known fault lines and where no quakes have ever occurred before. The book is the first in a series of Catastrophe Map Reports. It is currently available an Amazon Kindle e-book: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FMIRVB6

A print version of “Human-Induced Earthquakes” will be included in a collection of future Catastrophe Map reports on nuclear disasters and toxic waste sites.

About the Editor: Sean O’Leary is a long-time technology journalist who has been gathering and publishing reports of environmental disasters on the Catastrophe Map website for more than seven years. An idealist at heart, Sean is known for his acerbic wit, razor-sharp intelligence, and aversion to PR spin. He examines the credibility of all reports, whether issued by government agencies and scientific associations or by special-interest groups and corporations.
