Coastal Fertility Offers a Way to Preserve Female Fertility Before Damaging Breast Cancer Treatments

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Oct. 29, 2013 - PRLog -- Statistics show that more and more young women are developing cancer, at a time when they may also be considering starting a family. The treatments often result in losing the ability to have children. Most modern treatments, especially chemotherapy, which are meant to destroy cancer cells, can also destroy the ovaries in the process. Fortunately, with some forethought, there are options…

The team at Coastal Fertility Specialists are helping cancer patients preserve their fertility despite harsh chemotherapy treatments. “Freezing eggs is just one way to help preserve ovarian function during cancer treatments,” says Dr. John Schnorr, Reproductive Endocrinologist at Coastal Fertility Specialists. Another involves using a drug called Lupron® to shut the ovaries down entirely while the chemotherapy is being administered. “The hope is that by shutting down ovarian function while someone is undergoing chemotherapy, the ovaries won’t be affected by the chemotherapy and the egg survival rate and overall fertility will be higher” says Schnorr. Another option is an ovarian transplant whereby one ovary is taken out entirely, frozen, and then put back in the patient’s body after the cancer treatment is complete. Schnorr says, unfortunately this option is currently met with limited success and involved surgery. Egg freezing, however, has become increasingly successful with eggs frozen for many years remaining as healthy as they were the day they were frozen. This allows a woman to wait until time and health permit her to carry a child.

With a CAP certified state-of-the-art laboratory, and success rates from frozen eggs being among the highest in the nation, South Carolina women now have a real option for preserving their fertility.

Coastal Fertility Specialists is currently offering all these options to female cancer patients. Media interested in interviews please contact Holly Clayson at 843-412-4894 or holly@flaireventsandmarketing.com.
