The DAPCEP Real McCoy Awards presented by DTE Energy honored STEMM professionals and more

DETROIT - Oct. 7, 2013 - PRLog -- DETROIT –– On the evening of September 12, 2013, the Detroit-based non-profit organization DAPCEP held its second annual DAPCEP Real McCoy Awards presented by DTE Energy to recognize Metro Detroit “Real McCoys.”

The event was a celebration of professionals in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) whose work is contributing toMichigan’s positioning as a global hub of the STEMM industry, and inspiring youth to pursue careers in STEMM.

The fundraiser, held at DTE Energy Headquarters in Detroit, brought in more than 200 guests and raised over $100,000, to support DAPCEP’s 4,000 youth.

“The tremendous support of DTE Energy, our presenting sponsor, as well as the support of our 23 co-sponsors made the evening a complete success and gave us great vision for the future,” says Jason Lee, DAPCEP executive director. “We are extremely pleased with the outcome of our second annual fundraiser.”

Event co-sponsors included Delphi Foundation, UAW-GM, Consumers Energy, Ford Motor Company, Oakland University School of Engineering & Computer Science, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, Chrysler Foundation, Michigan State University – University Outreach and Engagement, University of Michigan Engineering, Avis Ford, Dow Corning, Fifth Third Bank, UAW-Ford Local 600, Marathon Petroleum, Meritor, MGM Grand Detroit, Vision IT, and Wayne State University - The Front Door. DAPCEP also acknowledges the support of Bridgewater Interiors, Dynamic HR, FasTracKids, First Independence Bank, and University of Detroit Mercy.

During the event’s opening reception, Jason Lee presented DTE Energy with the DAPCEP Real McCoy Corporate Awardfor its continued support of the DAPCEP Real McCoy Awards, and its role as a longstanding DAPCEP programming partner. Accepting on behalf of DTE Energy was Jerry Norcia, president and chief operating officer of DTE Gas, a subsidiary of DTE Energy Company.

“At DTE Energy, we aspire to be the best-operated energy company in North America and a force for growth and prosperity in the communities where we live and serve,” says Norcia. “That’s one of the reasons we support DAPCEP, which is an organization that is also striving to be a catalyst for change in our community. Many DTE Energy employees have backgrounds in at least one of the STEMM disciplines, and dozens of our employees have benefitted directly from DAPCEP.”

DAPCEP presented the following Real McCoy Awards:

·       Science - Dr. Jerry Caldwell, Director, Drew Scholars Program, Michigan State University/UMICH-Ann Arbor

·    Technology - Rodney O'Neal, CEO, Delphi Corporation (due to a previous commitment, Mr. O’Neal was not able to attend the event. Lindsey Williams, Vice President Government Affairs, Delphi Foundation accepted on Mr. O’Neal’s behalf)

·       Engineering - Jessica Moreno, Engineering Business Manager, General Motors-Global Electrical Systems

·       Mathematics - Ronald Hall, President and CEO, Bridgewater Interiors

·       Medicine - Dr. Linda Gillum, Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine

Educator Award - DAPCEP instructors.

Legacy Award - Detroit Public Schools District, a DAPCEP partner since the organization was established in 1976. Alycia Meriweather, DPS executive director, Office of Science and DAPCEP Board Member accepted the award on behalf of DPS.

“DAPCEP has always been an excellent educational partner to Detroit Public Schools,” says Meriweather. “It has positively contributed to multiple generations in DPS, and those investments will continue to pay dividends for many, many years to come.  Detroit Public Schools is thankful for the legacy of partnership, and is committed to continued collaboration in the years to come, as DAPCEP continues to evolve and innovate to reach the next generation.”

Junior Real McCoy Award - DAPCEP students from DPS middle and high schools whose projects were awarded at the 2013 Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit:

·       Brandon Holt (8th Grade, Brewer Academy)

·  Tajayia Thomas (7th Grade, Thurgood Marshall Elementary/Middle School), Matthew Johnson (9th Grade, Renaissance High School)

·       Elijah White (7th Grade, Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men)

The evening would not have been complete without a presentation of inventions from two DAPCEP students in the organization’s Little Engineer That Could Program, which introduces kindergarten through third grade students to STEMM subjects. Aniya Floyd (Plymouth Educational Center) invented a unique night light for children and Marquinn Lewis, Jr. (Romulus Elementary School) invented a method for senior citizens to easily remove their shoes.

Alexis Wiley, Fox 2 News reporter served as mistress of ceremonies of the event for the second year.

Funds raised from the 2nd Annual DAPCEP Real McCoy Awards presented by DTE Energy allow DAPCEP to place youth on university campuses to take courses such as forensics, aerodynamics, Computer Aided Design and aerospace engineering.
