Sansum offered young entrepreneurs leadership and success advice Sunday in this year’s quarterly leadership meeting in Glasgow.  “Most of us mere mortals got into our positions through a combination of several things: luck, circumstances, a little bit of skill, a lot of perseverance, but most of all, through the work of others,” Sansum said.

“How to succeed” is one of the key questions young entrepreneurs face on a daily basis in the industry. The tech community reveres successful CEOs and founders like Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page, Tim Cook, and Marissa Mayer, looking to them for wisdom about what it takes to build and lead a billion businesses.

Sansum discusses five items for young entrepreneurs to follow in order to create their own billion businesses. “You have to build trust with your team and people,” he said. “You do this by being forthright and clear from day one. As a leader, you are totally transparent — your people are looking at you all the time. If try to lead in some way that isn’t true to who you are, they will see through it and you will lose trust of team. People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care”

“Standards are important. The “standard” is just the level to which you expect something to be done. Why be average,” he said. “You have to eradicate excuses.” In order to eradicate excuses the CEO of Swan Global Direct discusses having a system or procedure to hit your standards. “Creating a system allows you and those around to grow confidence because it removes the emotion out of the process and creates a logical means of resolve.”

“Once you create a standard and follow a system others around you will need to be developed, have you learned how to train people before you have people on your team,” questions Sansum. “Having a strong team is important but if you can’t train them to work without you then you do not have an effective team.” As a leader people look up to you for guidance and support so are you continuing to learn and develop or networking with others to be the best leader? The best businessperson is always learning.
