ATLANTA - Sept. 18, 2013 - PRLog -- Dr. Beatriz Amendola, world-renowned radiation oncologist and an honored Fellow of the American Society of Radiation Oncology ASTRO (FASTRO), arrives to Atlanta, Georgia to contribute as lecturer at ASTRO’s 55th Annual Meeting: “Patients: Hope • Guide • Heal”, being held at the Georgia World Congress Center from September 22nd to the 25th, 2013 www.astro.org

Dr. Amendola has become part of a national program to educate on the benefits of the latest technology in radiation for cancer patients. “Many patients have a negative outlook on radiation because of the  stigma there is on old technology. They do not know that nowadays it is an excellent alternative for many cancer patients.” - Dr. Amendola affirms.

Dr. Amendola will speak at the “International Attendees Breakfast” and will participate at the “Global Health Symposium”, lecturing on “Radiation Oncology in Latin America”. Participants of ASTRO’s meeting include over 11,000 oncologists from all disciplines such as: medical physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, radiation oncology nurses, nurse practitioners, biologists, physician assistants, practice administrators, industry administrators and other health care professionals from around the globe. The focus is on patient-centered care; the importance of the physician’s role in improving patient-reported outcomes and the quality and safety of patient care.

Dr. Beatriz Amendola is a female pioneer doctor, who with more than 20 years of experience in radiation oncology, travels around the world sharing her knowledge with colleagues. She dedicates part of her practice to teaching others the benefits of and on how to implement innovative radiation technologies in Latin America and in other countries.

Dr. Beatriz Amendola has also been awarded Fellowship from The American College of Radiology (ACR) and has extensive knowledge in the field of radiation therapy, with expertise in radiosurgery using the latest technologies. Her main areas of interest include breast, lung, head/neck and prostate cancer as well as brain tumors.

Beatriz Amendola, M.D., F.A.C.R., FASTRO is Board Certified in Therapeutic Radiology by the American Board of Radiology.  She completed her residency in Radiation Oncology at the Medical College of Virginia, in Richmond, Virginia in 1980.  Dr. Amendola was an Assistant and then Associate Professor at the Department of Radiation Oncology of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She was Acting Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology for four years. In 1985, she moved to Philadelphia where she was Director of Residency Training in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Hahnemann University. In 1989, she moved to Miami, FL where she was appointed Associate Professor and Director of Residency Training at the University of Miami, Department of Radiation Oncology.

Currently, Dr. Amendola has an independent practice in Radiation Oncology, and she has privileges at multiple South Florida hospitals. She is a member of many professional medical societies in USA, Europe, and Latin America. In 1999, she was awarded the Fellowship from the American College of Radiology and in 2009 the Fellowship of the American Society of Radiation Therapy and Oncology (ASTRO). She serves on several national and international cancer committees. Dr. Amendola has written 56 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and 12 book chapters. She has extensive experience in the use of radiation therapy for cancer as well as the use of radiation for the treatment of benign diseases. Her main areas of expertise include breast cancer, prostate cancer, brain tumors, head and neck cancer, and pediatric radiation therapy. She has extensive experience in radiosurgery using Gamma Knife and CyberKnife.
