BURNS HARBOR, Ind. - Aug. 26, 2013 - PRLog -- Lake Shore Toyota in Burns Harbor, which sells the 2013 Toyota Yaris, has learned the automaker is planning to release a new concept car based on the current model. The Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R concept features a hybrid powertrain with enough power to take to the race track. The vehicle will make its official debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show later this year.

So far Toyota has only released a teaser image showcasing the sporty hatchback concept. A few weeks earlier, the company had released a mysterious image featuring only a logo with an “R” on it. This led to speculation Toyota was releasing a new Supra, but then another photo appeared of what looked to be the corner of the current Yaris hatchback.

Currently, Toyota already has a standard Toyota Yaris Hybrid hatchback, but it’s only available to European drivers. Overseas, it stands as one of the most affordable hybrids on the market, but it’s not exactly a car one would take to the race track. It features only a 1.5L engine and eCVT electric motor that puts out under 100 hp. The upside is it’s capable of more than 60 mpg.

While the Yaris Hybrid-R will retain a similar subcompact hatch body, the racing hybrid will likely have four times the output. The car has a 1.6L powertrain with two separate electric motors that will allow the Yaris to function in all-wheel drive.

The car is designed to deliver maximum power in short amounts of time. This is helped thanks to a regenerative braking system; when the car starts braking, power is sent to a supercapacitor which delivers the stored energy where and when it's needed.

More information about the vehicle will be revealed at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, starting September 10, 2013. At the auto show, Toyota plans to also share new updates about the state of their hydrogen fuel cell. Toyota is currently planning to release their first production hydrogen car sometime in 2015.

Contact Lake Shore Toyota to learn more about the concept car. The dealership has the current Toyota Yaris in stock, as well as affordable hybrid models like the 2013 Toyota Prius-C. Lake Shore Toyota is located at 244 Melton Road in Burns Harbor, Indiana.
