currently only gateway 3ds flashcart can play 3ds games  on your 3ds or 3ds xl, if you want to find a flashcart to play 3ds games, the only flashcart is gateway 3ds. but gateway 3ds card currently can only work on 3ds V4.5 or below versions. if your 3ds console has been updated to the latest version, your 3ds console can not use the gateway 3ds.

you also need to get some items to use the gateway 3ds card, such as two micro sd card, one will store the ds games and the other will store 3ds games. as we know that you 3ds games is very big, max to 8GB, so you should at least get a 32g sd card.

you also need to get another sd card which wil store the game saves. the new 3ds console usually comes with a 2g or 4g sd card, so you can use it.

gateway 3ds flashcart package contains two card, one blue gateway 3ds flashcart and one red gateway 3ds flashcart.  the blue gateway 3ds card is to play ds games and the gateway 3ds red card is to play 3ds games.

at first, you need to set up the SD card, just download the GW_Release_1.1a, extract it, there is a folder named GW Release and a Launcher.dat file on the sd card. just copy the Launcher.dat file on the root of your sd card.

secondly, you need to set up the blue gateway 3ds flashcart, after you download the GW_Release_1.1a  extract it, there will be also a Blue Card (R4i) folder, just copy all the contents to the root of your sd card. then put the micro sd card on the blue gateway 3ds card, insert the blue gateway 3ds card into 3ds console, you will see a game on the screen, click it and there will be a GW3DS logo called "GW Install" show up, just click and run it to install.

after you install the GW install successfully, go to Setting----other settings---profile---nintendo ds profile---Your 3DS will crash, reboot, and you will be in GW3DS mode. You must go back into the Nintendo DS Profile setting, and crash your 3DS every time you turn it off. You must also run the GW Install homebrew each time you use the 3DS' DS mode (ROMs, homebrew, etc), and do every step thereafter.

then you are in gateway 3ds mode now, the next step is to write your 3ds games to another micro sd card. just download the Win32 Disk Imager program, run it, choose the 3ds games and write it to your micro sd card.
then put the micro sd card on your red gateway 3ds card and then play.
