Cerritos College Woodworking Students Utilize Skills Learned in Class to Create Doors on Campus

Cerritos College Woodworking Students created sliding doors for the Center for Teaching Excellence building.

NORWALK, Calif. - Aug. 21, 2013 - PRLog -- The Sliding Room Divider was conceived by the former Dean of Academic Success and Institutional Effectiveness, Dr. Bryan Reece, designed by Woodworking Professor Anthony Fortner, and created by the students in the Woodworking class, WMT 268 Production Woodworking.

The Woodworking Manufacturing Technologies (WMT) Department at Cerritos College offers classes in furniture making, cabinetmaking, woodturning, and related topics. Certificate programs are designed to give students a complete background as well as the most current understanding of technology. In the 27,000 square-foot facility, classroom theory is combined with hands-on woodworking experience, with emphasis on training for specific job skills.

The class WMT 268 Production Woodworking is an Advanced Class which requires both Cabinetmaking and Furnituremaking prerequisites.

The students in WMT 268 built the Sliding Room Divider, which features two huge Sliding doors flanked by Fixed Sidelights on both sides. The doors are made from Solid ASH and operate with a very smooth sliding by acting on concealed bearings. The doors were created to be a room divider in the building, and to create a Conference Room when closed and a general workspace when open.

“With this projects the students learned how to work as a team, how to operate in a professional environment, how to plan, and gained confidence in their skills,” said Woodworking Professor, Anthony Fortner, “It was a great project to give them the on the job training they will need in the real world.”
