LVPEI Organizes India’s First Ever Pure Refractive Surgery Meet

Aug. 19, 2013 - PRLog -- Hyderabad, August 19, 2013: Refractive Surgery 360, a two day event focusing solely on refractive surgery was held in Hyderabad over the weekend.  Presently in our country, refractive surgery is at the crossroads with much potential to become the next big wave in Ophthalmology. The unifying theme of the event organized by L V Prasad Eye Institute was to understand the science behind the art of refractive surgery and the direction it seems to be heading in. The meeting focused on laser corneal surgery, machine technology, corneal topography, biomechanics, refractive correction of keratoconus, lens based refractive surgery and phakic IOLs. Various doctors from prestigious universities and hospitals from across the world participated in the meeting.

Apart from beginning the day with stellar faculty members, the highlight of the event was the exclusive live surgical procedures performed by the best doctors, professors in Ophthalmology with an active two-way interaction. “This one-of-a-kind meeting helped focus on refractive surgery especially when India is at the threshold of a huge upswing in the number of patients seeking freedom from glasses. It was possible for us to bring the greatest minds in Ophthalmology to exchange dialogue and knowledge about imperative matters on refractive surgery,” said Dr. Pravin Krishna Vaddavalli, Head - Refractive Surgery, Cataract, Contact Lens Services, L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI).

 

The meeting opened with a session on the language of refractive surgery and endorsed the message that vision is not just 20/20, but also choosing the correct surgery is important. The conference also focused on interpreting corneal topography and making sense of aberrations and corneal biomechanics. Sonia Yoo, Professor of Ophthalmology, Cornea and Refractive surgery from Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami presented a course on Femtosecond lasers. On the other hand, Ronald Krueger, Medical Director of Refractive surgery from Cleveland Clinic, Ohio exhibited a course on correcting presbyopia. The meeting also had hugely popular courses on Keratoconus and Corneal Topography presented by George Kymionis from University of Crete, Greece and Carlos G Arce, Paulista School of Medicine from Federal University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, respectively. Other illustrious sessions included Dr. Jodbhir Mehta’s course on Small Incision Corneal Refractive Surgery, Dr. Srinivas K Rao’s course on refractive surgery for beginners and Dr. Rohit Shetty’s course on corneal aberrations.
