CHARLESTON, S.C. - Aug. 12, 2013 - PRLog -- Statistics show that one in eight couples will struggle with infertility.  With more than 7.3 million in the US seeking fertility treatment, it is important for couples to be properly educated on infertility causes and treatment options available.  Dr. Stephanie Singleton of The Fertility Center of Charleston has highlighted some of the most common fertility myths.
Myth #1
Infertility is a Woman’s Issue
This is one of the biggest myths, states Dr. Singleton.  “In fact, 35-40 % of the couples trying to conceive are struggling due to problems with the male.  The good news, there are several treatments available for male factor infertility.”
Myth #2
Fertility Issues only affect women in their 30’s and 40’s
“Fertility peaks for women in their early twenties, however, even young women can have issues of infertility including those with irregular menstrual cycles and those with tubal factor infertility,” states Dr. Singleton.
Myth #3
IVF or InVitro Fertilization is the ONLY option available
“We like to take a stair case approach to fertility treatment.  For most couples there are many options to consider before deciding on in vitro fertilization.”
Myth#4
There is nothing couples can do to prepare to conceive
Dr. Singleton says there are several things a couple can do to prepare.  “The female should begin taking prenatal vitamins containing folic acid.   She should maintain a healthy diet and get adequate exercise to maintain a healthy weight.  Finally, both partners should discontinue smoking before trying to conceive.”
