Follow on Google News | Four Points of Computer Health4 pointsof computer health Gary Poovey Ph.D. 1. Listen to your computer. If the sound that your computer makes when it stores a document or does a search changes, this is may indicate that the hard drive is showing its age. Make sure that the data on the hard drive is copied to another place. This is called backing up the data. Make sure that your data on the drive is backed up daily, and checked for reliability periodically. 2. Stop plugging in your lap top when the battery is already fully charged. Charging a battery up when only partially discharged limits the battery life. Battery life is usually improved by using them to without external power attached until they are almost completely without charge, and then charging them up over night to full charge. Heat kills batteries. Batteries that are kept cool last longer. 3. Feel the tension on the cables going to your computer. Cables should not be stressed at the place that they plug into your computer. If there is a tight cable that is not easy to move connected to your computer, this could lead to loss of connection when you need it most. Make sure that the cables to your computer are not stressed where they connect to your computer. 4. Look into your keyboard to see if many particles have fallen into it. Periodically your key board should be turned upside down and shaken out. Office supply stores sell compressed air bottles for computer cleaning. The jet of clean compressed air can remove the particles that have fallen into your keyboard. The keys may not always work properly if particles are allowed to build up in the keyboard.
