Poovey’s Trouble Shooting Tip 1:  Everyone is important –Here is our illustrative story: The wafer fabrication facility was huge.  As a visitor, I was checked in at one corner of the facility, the other engineers and I made our way into one of the fabrication areas past offices and other rooms. This facility had a hall that linked two buildings that was surrounded by glass windows. The hall floor was at least 12 feet above the ground below at one point.  One time on the outside of the window was 14 inch walking stick (Family Phasmatodea). It was the biggest bug I have ever seen. Once we had put on our clean room suits, and gone into the fabrication area the three engineers talked with me about the wafers that we had to use, and what our test plan was going to be. It happened that a person who mopped the floor several times a day came through where we were having our discussion. This happened at least once a day, and I would greet the young fellow who mopped the floor.  I asked him if he was in school.  He was, and we talked about his future.  The other engineers acted like I had disappeared.  They did not so much as acknowledge that the young fellow existed. They did not speak to him or even look at him.  He was not there as far as they were concerned, and when I spoke to him I disappeared too. I recommend more humility than my colleagues demonstrated that day.  One night I was working late doing some tests, and I finished processing a wafer and I needed a profile measuring machine that drags a needle over the surface of the wafer to measure feature heights.  I was in a pickle, because the facility goes on for miles in all directions, and I had no idea where the machine might be.  I was standing there with my wafer wondering how I was going to get the information that I needed, and who should walk through the area where I was working but the young man who mopped the floors. Now, he mops the floors, he knows where everything is.  He took me to the profile machine, and in minutes I had the information that I needed.  It is wise to greet and care about the people who check your credentials when you enter a secured company. Someday you might lose your badge, and if they know you, they might be able to supply you with a temporary badge. When troubleshooting highly technical problems it is wise to care about everyone, because anyone can become a needed asset when the situation changes. Remember everyone is important.
