Aug. 1, 2013 - PRLog -- First off let me start by saying that not everyone is designed to compete or should feel like they have to compete but the benefits of competition can make a huge difference on your martial arts education. When you get out there and compete you see how much stress and work it takes to actually compete a high level and as you progress you get the most comfortable feeling out there and your able to apply your skills.

A lot of times people are frustrated in their first match when they compete and conditioning gets the best of them and they don’t get to apply all of the skills they trained so hard to learn. That’s why I recommend that people should compete especially instructors and here at Peak Performance our instructors don’t just instruct, they actually participate. They are always helping out during class, coaching you from the side lines of the tournament, working out and training with you.

I’ve been training for 16 years now and I still try to compete as much I can. I just got back from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil were I was able to compete in the International Master and Seniors Tournament and I learned a lot just from that tournament. I learned things about myself as a coach and competitor that I never would have without competing. This weekend we have another tournament and with our students and instructors competing we have 37 people competing. Last month we had 9 people compete in a muay thai tournament but the coolest thing about in Peak Performance is the coaches compete out there with our students trying to improving themselves, trying to get better, trying to become a better instructor and trying to become a better person.

I understand that competition is not for everyone and the crazy thing is only about 10% of our school competes, the other 90% coming to Peak Performance for amazing workouts, learning self-defense, meeting new people and developing lifelong friendships. The good thing is if you don’t compete that you know that your instructor competes and is always out there pushing it, putting it out on the line and making themselves better. They are out there learning so they can teach you all the necessary skills that you would need to perform under pressure. Not everyone should compete should be its good to know that your coaches do.
