How to Reduce Allergens in the Home

There are a few easy steps you can take to reduce the amount of allergens in your home.

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - Aug. 1, 2013 - PRLog -- One of the easiest first steps to reduce allergens, is to remove your shoes before coming into the house, or use an antibacterial doormat. Over 90% of the dirt, mold and allergens is brought into your home on the bottom of your shoes. Not only do shoes bring in microbes and toxins, a regular entry mat can actually breed more dust mites and microorganisms.

There are many types of antibacterial doormats. One you can get at your local hardware store is called Dr. Doormat. When you wipe your shoes on this doormat, you create a positively charged force that traps and kills microbes, bacteria and other microorganisms.

Inside your home, you should vacuum once or twice a week with a HEPA filter. This type of filter will trap pollen, pet dander, dust mites and even tobacco smoke. Another routine that you should have is using a hot water extraction carpet cleaner at least 2 times a year. The EPA says that using a hot water carpet cleaner will get a carpet 1,500 percent cleaner than vacuuming. Using a carpet cleaner traps dirt, dust, bacteria and dust mites. The result is much cleaner carpets and much cleaner air quality.

Using the hood vent over your stove and the exhaust vent in your bathroom regularly will reduce moisture from the house, reducing mold and mildew. A hot humid home is a breeding ground for dust mites and mold.

Just following these few routines will help reduce the amount of allergens in your home and improve the air quality.
