After returning to the surface of the well the used drilling fluid flows directly to the shale shakers where it begins to be processed. It can remove cuttings above 75μm brought from the drilling well and the liquid with smaller particles will flow into tanks from where the fluid will flow into next grade solids control equipment to be treated. The solids removed by the shale shaker are discharged out of the discharge port into a separate holding tank where they await further treatment or disposal. Shale shakers are considered by most of the drilling industry to be the most important device in the solid control system as the performance of the successive equipment directly relates to the cleanliness of the treated drilling fluid. And the drilling mud will then be sent to a Degasser by the centrifuge, which is the second stage in drilling fluid mud system. A Degasser is a device used in drilling to remove gasses from drilling fluid which could otherwise form bubbles. For small amount of entrained gas in a drilling fluid, the Degasser can play a major role of removing small bubbles that a liquid film has enveloped and entrapped. In order for it to be released and break out the air and gas such as methane, H2S and CO2 from the mud to the surface, the drilling fluid must pass degassing technique and it can be accomplished by the equipment called Degasser which is also a major part of a mud systems. Mud drilling fluids is then pumped to mud cleaner. Mud cleaner is the third stage separation equipment of drilling liquid, which will deal with the mud after being treated by the second grade separation equipment. Desander makes separations between 40 and 100 microns while Desilter makes separations between 10 and 74 microns. The barite will be recovered and cuttings which are bigger than barite will be removed. Then the barite in the underflow will flow into circulation tanks through the screens when the weighted mud passes while the particles that are bigger than mesh will be removed. Mud cleaner is the combination of Desander and Desilter. Sometimes, they are separated. Desander is considered as the third stage, and Desilter the fourth stage. Decanter centrifuge is the last stage, used in separating suspension of solid phase with particle diameter d≥2μm for drilling mud and fluids handling.
