Indie Publishing Company Succeeds with Unique Business Model

July 14, 2013 - PRLog -- Marble, NC, July 13, 2013 -- Word Branch Publishing is an independent publishing company dedicated to working with new and emerging authors. Founded in January of 2012, the fledgling company is a cooperative of authors, editors and proofreaders as well as its innovative illustrator, Julian Norwood who creates the unique painted covers.

Word Branch, or WBP, is the creation of founder Catherine Rayburn-Trobaugh. A writer herself, Rayburn-Trobaugh also worked in marketing for a textbook company and saw a flawed system that minimized the writer’s role and strength.

“It’s my goal to give power and dignity back to the writer, to work with WBP as a team member rather than a commodity,” says Rayburn-Trobaugh of the company philosophy.

No one on the WBP team draws a salary—all team members work for a portion of the royalties, banking on the books becoming successes.

The cornerstone of WBP is their successful Guides for the Befuddled series, a collection of concise e-guides on a variety of subjects including literature, writing and pet-care.

Word Branch Publishing’s name has a dual meaning that reflects the company’s ideals. WBP’s own account explains the metaphors:

“Words, as individual units, have little impact. But put them together, and they form unique shapes. Like every tree is different, so are the configurations of words, and the end result can range from functional to spectacular.

A branch is also a small creek that flows into larger bodies of water. It often springs from the earth. . . . By itself it is beautiful and full of life. And when it joins with a larger creek it becomes wild and winding.  Finally, it flows into a placid river in the valley. Words, too, transform like the branch.”
