How dangerous are sharks and where does our fear of them actually come from?

July 11, 2013 - PRLog -- We seem to take it for granted that people are terrified of sharks, but actually wouldn’t it be more sensible to be afraid of cars or guns or things that continually pose a real danger to us?

Sharks tend to be demonized in the media. From big budget horrors such as “Jaws”, to more modest shockers such as “Deep Blue Sea”, sharks are presented as somewhat psychopathic. It is highly unlikely that this represents their true nature, but a stigma is a stigma and the poor shark is hunted and killed based on these prejudices.

As a matter of fact, more people are killed by falling coconuts (250 people) each year than by sharks (approximately 30 people).

Quodex.com posed the question, “What do you think of sharks?

The answer format was in the form of a multiple choice, which received more than 250 responses in under an hour.

24%      They are great if you leave them alone

20%      They terrify me!

32%      Just once of Gods’ great creatures

24%      They make the sea dangerous!

Clearly, the general public is divided with 56% of respondents providing positive responses and 44% providing negative responses.
