July 1, 2013 - PRLog -- Many UK residents with impaired mobility rely upon electric mobility scooters to allow them the freedom and independence to lead a normal daily life. Online retailer More Than Mobility is a leading supplier of portable, pavement and road legal mobility scooters, but their website also offers a wealth of information and advice for people coping with mobility complications. Now, More Than Mobility is offering more insight into the safe and proper use of any mobility scooter to ensure that drivers get the most from their vehicle and do so in safety.

Only Class 3 Invalid Carriages, or road legal mobility scooters, can be driven on the road, at a maximum speed of 8mph. Users cannot drive in bus lanes, ‘cycle only’ cycle lanes or on motorways. It is also recommended that drivers avoid dual carriageways with a speed limit of more than 50mph. All road legal mobility scooters must feature a flashing amber light which is to be used at all times when driving on a dual carriageway.

Mobility scooter drivers are also obligated to follow the Highway Code.

All portable and pavement mobility scooters, or road legal mobility scooters, must not exceed a max speed limit of 4mph on footpaths or in pedestrian areas. Normal parking restrictions apply and vehicles should not be left on a footpath or pedestrian area where it could get in the way of pedestrians, wheelchair users and people with prams or pushchairs.

While there are no legal eyesight requirements for driving mobility scooters, but the driver should be able to read a car registration number from a distance of 12.3m, or 40 feet. If a mobility scooter user causes an accident, due to their poor sight, they could be liable to pay accident compensation.

Mobility scooters can be used by able bodied persons, but only in very limited circumstances. Non disabled persons can only drive mobility scooters when demonstrating the vehicle before it is sold, when training a disabled user, or when transporting the vehicle to or from maintenance or repair work.
