DELHI, India - June 20, 2013 - PRLog -- Too much water can cause devastation damaging property and effecting dozens of lives. An after effect of these watersheds can be attributed to increase in the level of pollutants posing a threat to ecosystem. As the flood water runs over different geographical areas, it carries with itself contaminants including oil, plastic bags, pesticides, fertilizers major outcome of this being groundwater contamination . A considerable amount of soil & sediments gets carried away, leading to Non-Point Source pollution. The impact of this being generation of areas with considerably negligible amount of oxygen leading to formation of dead zones.

• Major Sources of Contaminants:-

·         • Vehicular Contaminants :- Grease, Oil

·         •  Insecticides, Pesticides

·         • Detergents & Soaps

·         • Accidental Spills

The pollution harms human as well as animal life equally with causing diseases, damaging of aquatic flora & fauna. Some of the consequences of floods are:-

Massive amounts of erosion may lead to undermining bridge structures, buildings
Floodwaters may contain biohazards due to direct contamination by untreated raw sewage, dead animals, rotting food, etc.
Contamination of Drinking water (http://www.spectro.in/Water-testing.html), especially if sewerage treatment plants are flooded.

It is therefore emphasized that this water must be treated to avoid damage .It is a problem that needs participation of each individual for minimizing or preventing the large scale pollution attributed to floods.
• Steps to reduce pollution due to flood:-
·         • Recycle vehicular & used oil, fluids etc.

·         • Drive Less to reduce vehicular emission

·         • Minimize usage of Fertilizers ,Pesticides & other soil contaminants

·         • Plant more trees especially the draught resistant ones

·         • Avoid usage of plastic bags

·         • Protect natural resources

·         • Use green & energy saving  technology
