June 19, 2012 - PRLog -- Spectro Analytical Labs Ltd. has recently been empanelled by ‘Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’ (FSSAI) for testing of food items entering into Indian market. The approval and authorization received by Spectro is testimony to the fact that its services are well accepted and appreciated in the field of Quality testing. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is an independent statutory body which has been set up under the Food Safety Standards Act (FSSA) 2006, and it is administratively controlled by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. This act requires FSSAI to fulfill a number of important responsibilities like specifying a proper and optimum system for enforcing scientifically logical standards for all commodities of food, be it raw, processed or packaged. It also has to monitor and regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, import etc. in order to ensure the most important objective of making available wholesome and safe food for human consumption. This act is a step towards identifying and subsequently eliminating the sub-standard and unsafe food items from the Indian markets.

The Food Safety Standards Act 2006 has been enacted to accommodate the good and relevant points of the various previously existing food laws, like Prevention of Food Adulteration Act (1954), Fruit Products Order (1955), Meat Food Products Order (1973), Vegetable Oil Products (Control) Order (1947), Edible Oils Packaging (Regulation) Order (1988), Milk and Milk Products Order (1992) etc. The applicability of these laws to various food items and their different ministerial controls created bottlenecks in the sorting out of quality related issues for food items. Hence, the promulgation of this law has facilitated the creation of a single reference point or window for the purpose of addressing all issues related to food products.

The Food Safety and Standards Regulations 2011 came into force from August 2011, and the regulations provide or guide the food business companies with the mechanism or process for registering and licensing of their food items. Needless to mention, that the primary objective of all such directives is to ensure quality and safety of available food items in the Indian food market. The regulations necessitate regular investigations or check (as per pre-determined test intervals), by the food business companies, of the raw food ingredients, water etc. which go into making (through various processing technologies) all the vast number of food items. To achieve all these aforesaid objectives, the food companies need to utilize the testing services provided by recognized/approved laboratories. Spectro Analytical labs Ltd. has been serving various industrial sectors, including food industry, for close to two decades.
