Follow on Google News | Ross Jurewitz Explains the Ramifications of Illegal Street Racing on KUSI NewsRoss Jurewitz, founder of the Jurewitz Law Group, discussed the ramifications of illegal street racing and a current case where his client was wrongfully injured in a hit-and-run street race on KUSI News Good Morning San Diego on May 29, 2013
Consequences of Speed Contests Under California Vehicle Code, “speed contests” or unauthorized vehicle races are illegal and carry significant penalties for participants and observers alike, even if the race does not result in an accident or injury. Penalties for speed contests can include imprisonment, fines, revoked driver’s licenses and even impoundment of any vehicles involved in an illegal race. During the interview, Mr. Jurewitz explained that his client could have been killed when his car was broadsided at an intersection by a speeding driver in a Honda Civic and then collided with the other racing driver in a Chevrolet Camaro. The driver of the Camaro was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving, illegal speed contest, and driving under the influence, while the driver of the Civic fled the scene of the accident on foot before the San Diego police arrived. The second driver has since been found, and faces the more serious charges of a felony hit-and-run. In addition to criminal ramifications, Mr. Jurewitz explained that both racers involved in this accident will also be held accountable for his client’s damages, including medical bills ranging over $100,000. Ultimately, the legal costs and compensatory damages will follow the illegal racers for years to come, if not for the rest of their lives. Legal Racing Alternatives Mr. Jurewitz is a strong proponent of the program RaceLegal.com, which provides a safer alternative to illegal street racing at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium. The program is supported by the local community, as well as the San Diego Police Department. Mr. Jurewitz emphasized that bringing attention to the dangers of illegal racing and the positive impact that RaceLegal.com has had on San Diego is the first step to keeping the streets safe.
