QUINCY, Mass. - May 24, 2013 - PRLog -- Falling for Whitey

Katherine Greig, the girlfriend of reputed gangster James "Whitey" Bulger, was sentenced to eight years of prison for aiding and abetting him during his sixteen years on the lam. She recently lost an appeal for a sentence reduction.

"Katherine fell for Whitey and now she is paying for it," stated Alison McLennan author of Falling for Johnny, a novel inspired by the Whitey Bulger story. Ms. McLennan, a writer presently living in Utah, grew up in Quincy and became intrigued by Bulger.

"My mother lived in the same apartment complex as Steve "The Rifleman" Flemmi. I imagined a story between a powerful gangster and a teenage girl. Whitey Bulger’s character and life story fascinated me. Over the years, the plot came together. I  thought they’d never find him. Word on the street was the FBI didn’t want to find him because he’d expose too many high level people. But now most of those people are dead,” she added.

Falling for Johnny is the story of Riley Donavan, a teenage girl who develops a relationship with a Bulger-like character. As the bond between the two of them deepens, Riley learns the truth about the gangster and faces a tough decision.

"Riley and Katherine Grieg made different choices. I'm sure Katherine now wishes she had resisted the gangster’s charm.  Eight years of prison is going to be tough for a woman accustomed to weekly hair and nail appointments," said McLennan.

“With moral ambiguity and questionable intentions, the cast lends a disconcerting air to McLennan’s solid debut. A dark, violent story with a heart.”  — Kirkus Reviews

Alison McLennan is a graduate of the Solstice MFA program where she received the first Dennis Lehane fellowship for fiction. She is native of Quincy who now lives in Ogden, Utah with her husband, son, and dog. Ms. McLennan is available for interviews. Falling for Johnny won an honorable mention in the 2012 Utah Original Writing Competition.
