Teaching future generations about litter

May 15, 2013 - PRLog -- The New Forest National Park Authority’s Education Team has once again teamed up with New Forest District Council and the Forestry Commission to visit schools to teach children about the dangers of littering, how it can affect wildlife, look unsightly, and damage the unique landscape of the New Forest.

The litter assemblies also promote ‘greener’ living, and the team also provides follow up sessions full of interactive games and activities for children of Key Stages 1 and 2 (five to 11 year olds).

This year’s theme focuses on the dangers of plastic bags. Many Forest animals mistake them for food, or get tangled up in them. Every week we use over 150 million plastic bags in the UK - many of which are not biodegradable or recyclable.

Sue Palma, Education Officer at the New Forest National Park Authority, said: ‘This is the fifth year we have been offering litter assemblies to schools across the Park. We use a variety of different themes to teach children about the long lasting effects littering has on the environment and the importance of taking their litter home with them.’
