LOS ANGELES - May 1, 2013 - PRLog -- The Los Angeles Chapter of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA-LA) has created a Not-for-Profit Educational Fund  so that nonprofit executives and IT staff may attend, at no charge, the Fifth Annual Information Security Summit on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Hilton Universal City Hotel in Los Angeles. The theme of the one-day Summit is The Growing Cyber Threat: Protect Your Business, which includes the business of operating nonprofits.

“We are offering free registration to our nonprofit friends because we know how important it is for nonprofits to protect themselves from cybercrime,” said ISSA-LA President Stan Stahl, PhD. “Nonprofits are prime targets of cybercriminals who steal sensitive personal information, credit card numbers and even bank funds.  Nonprofits typically have sensitive data that belongs to the people in our community, and which cannot be secured if staff members and executives are not aware of how to deal with the danger they face. Nonprofits must also comply with laws and regulations such as HIPAA, credit card regulations and state breach disclosure laws. The idea of extending a hand to nonprofits is in line with ISSA-LA’s credo that It takes the village to secure the village SM ”

The ISSA-LA Summit is the only educational forum in Los Angeles specifically designed for participation and interaction among business and nonprofit executives, senior nonprofit managers, and their trusted advisors;  technical IT personnel with responsibility for information systems and the data they contain; and information security practitioners with responsibility for ensuring the security of sensitive information.

The Summit will have a special Executive Forum for the C-Suite and their trusted advisors. Other panels and talks throughout the day will provide IT staff with vital security information.

Nonprofits wishing to take advantage of the opportunity to attend ISSA-LA’s 5th Annual Information Security Summit free of charge should contact Lisa Pompan, Chapter Adminstrator at admin@issa-la.org.

Registration to the Summit is open to anyone, but is particularly recommended for information security practitioners; IT professionals; business and nonprofit executives; professionals in the fields of law, accounting, insurance, and banking; law enforcement professionals fighting cybercrime; and faculty and students in college and university cybersecurity programs.

The Information Security Summit is part of ISSA-LA’s community outreach program. The goal of the program is to help the community stay safe from cybercrime by enabling the necessary collaboration between business, nonprofit and community leaders, technical IT professionals, and the information security community. More information about the Summit is available at the Chapter’s website: www.issa-la.org.
