Follow on Google News | Cholera & Vibrio cholerae Discussed in New Online VideoThe IAQ Video Network releases another educational video about microbial pathogens, indoor air quality (IAQ) or environmental issues.
An estimated 3-5 million cases and over 100,000 deaths occur each year around the world due to cholera. The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can be severe. Approximately 5% of infected people will have severe disease characterized by profuse watery diarrhea, vomiting and leg cramps. In these people, rapid loss of body fluids leads to dehydration and shock. Without treatment, death can occur within hours. “Cholera is an acute, diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholerae,” reported Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates, the company behind the IAQ Video Network and the new public outreach video. “Vibrio cholerae is usually found in water or food sources that have been contaminated by feces from a person infected with cholera. Cholera is most likely to be found and spread in places with inadequate water treatment, poor sanitation and inadequate hygiene. Vibrio cholerae may also live in the environment in brackish rivers and coastal waters. Shellfish eaten raw have been a source of cholera, and people in the United States have contracted cholera after eating raw or undercooked shellfish from the Gulf of Mexico. We hope this short video helps to shed some light on this important issue.” To view this video please visit: http://www.youtube.com/ To view past videos about environmental, microbial and infectious issues, please visit: http://www.youtube.com/ This educational video was sponsored by a number of organizations and leading industry professionals that help protect the public’s health.
