#championsTVE Analysis | The most tweeted players

On March 6th, at the height of the soccer Champions’ League, Brandchats had the opportunity to monitor media coverage of the greatest players in one of the most important football tournaments in Europe.

SAN FRANCISCO - March 18, 2013 - PRLog -- Tracking would not have been possible without the collaboration of Rodrigo Miranda (http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=76156&locale=en_US&trk=tyah2) (@Rmiranda) General  Director of InternetAcademi (http://internetacademi.com/?gclid=CO-j3OW09LUCFYfJtAodtjQA6Q) and ISDI (http://www.isdi.es/) and co-host of the analysis in Desafio Champions (@ChampionsTVE) on the Teledeporte channel of RTVE (Spanish Radio and Television).

This collaboration is an initiative in which MIB (Master of Internet Business) students use Brandchats’ software in their studies. MIB (http://mib.isdi.es/) is the first Integral Master of Digital Business, created and developed by ISDI.

The analysis includes the knockout stages of the Champions’ League. Data capture began on February 11th and the tool has collected a total of 15,127 mentions on Twitter with the hashtag #championsTVE through March 6th, match day between Manchester United and Real Madrid.

The renowned TV program (http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/desafio-champions/anal...) was focused on the Twitter conversation surrounding the teams involved in the competition and their most high-profile players.

The influence and sentiment of participants in the Twitter dialogue were the factors taken into consideration.

<< Your Tweets aren’t thrown to the wind – the information is analyzed >>

The teams involved in the study are: FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Milan, Malaga, Oporto, Paris SG and Valencia.

Real Madrid has been the team with most interaction with the hashtag #championsTVE (6,806 mentions) followed by Manchester United (2,282 mentions) and Valencia (1,149mentions).

The study has determined the most mentioned player associated with the hashtag #championsTVE. First was Messi in the match Milan – FC Barcelona with 131 mentions, followed by De Gea in the match R. Madrid – Manchester with 118 mentions. The 3rd position was Ibrahimovic in the match Valencia – PSG with 112 entries and 4th was Isco in the match Oporto – Malaga with 76 mentions.

<< Can talk we about sentiment in Social Media >>

We should emphasize the positive interest that Twitter has brought to Malaga. It is almost certainly due to this being their first appearance in the Champions’ League. Neutral sentiment is the most prevalent in soccer conversation, and the feeling is more positive than negative towards all teams.

#championsTVE – a highly geo-located hashtag

Soccer is one of the most high-profile sports in Spain, as in the rest of the world. Their players are ambassadors of numerous brands, the shirts are symbols of pride for the wearer and the sport captures a large share of the television audience.

Geolocation shows that the hashtag # championsTV has caused worldwide impact.

Surprisingly in the U.S. where baseball, American football and basketball are the leading lights, more and more people are showing an interest in soccer. The Spanish-speaking influence and immigration have been important factors.

To a lesser extent, the hashtag #championsTV travels to Asian countries. The world of microblogging does not understand borders.

Monitoring behavior

Behavior is an issue that demands monitoring, be that a purchase, or searching for keywords related to a product. In soccer, excitement and controversy go hand in hand. Because of that, Brandchats included in the study which behavior linked to a match generated most discussion on Twitter.

Ranking

1. Penalty

2. Foul

3. Offside

4. Referee

5. Card

6. Hands

The peaks of these comments came mainly on the day of a game as well as the day after, since the event is still fresh and makes for an exchange of views on Twitter.
