Houston Garage Door Expert Alerts Area Homeowners to Spike in Robberies through Garage Doors

Javaid Iqbal, owner of Saras Garage Doors says careless homeowners may be making it easy for burglars to gain access to their homes

Feb. 19, 2013 - PRLog -- Houston, Texas overhead garage door specialist, Saras Garage Doors said today that careless homeowners may be making it relatively easy for burglars to gain access to their homes without being aware of it.

Javaid Iqbal, owner of Saras Garage Doors (http://www.sarasgaragedoors.com) was reacting to recent reports that the rate at which burglars are gaining access to area homes is spiking.

Police departments in Texas, Tennessee, California and New Jersey recently reported an increase in home invasions. Some of the burglars gained access to the homes using garage door remote controls.

Iqbal said all area homeowners and residents need to do to stop the thieves is secure their garage door remote controls and change the access codes.

“It is really not complicated at all. All homeowners or residents need to do is hide their remote control and take a few minutes to change the access code. Just do not leave it in your car at the end of the day,” Iqbal said earlier today.

The Houston area garage door specialist said it is no coincidence that these burglaries are on the rise.

"I would say it's more than a coincidence that the burglars use the same method to get in the house each time. You know, I was surprised earlier this week when a resident told me she has been living in her home for more than a decade and never bothered to change the default access code,” Iqbal added.

To gain access to homes, thieves would vandalize cars parked on driveways while families sleep.

“Once they have the remote control, it is just a question of clicking the button and they are in the house,”Sgt. Cindy West  of the Seattle Sheriff’s Department said.

Seattle area resident, Dave Neale is one recent victim. He said the thieves went into his car, found the garage door remote control and in seconds were inside his home where they stole credit and debit cards before being scared away by the family dog.

Neale’s family was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom when the incident happened.

“Take your garage door openers out of your car. This is not a new trend. It's happened for years," Sgt. Cindy West warned homeowners.

Iqbal said that is a good advice and residents in Houston, The Woodlands, Sugar Land, Katy, Missouri City, Pearland, Richmond, Rosenberg and Stafford, Texas need to heed it.

“That is what homeowners really need to do to stop these thieves. Take your garage door remote control with you. Don’t leave it in your car and change the default access code” Iqbal added.
