WellSpring Resources Receives Grant to Help Woman

WellSpring Resources of Alton, Illinois, recently received a $10,000 grant from the Alton Woman's Home Association that will help local women overcome opiate dependence.

Feb. 8, 2013 - PRLog -- WellSpring Resources recently received a $10,000 grant from the Alton Woman’s Home Association.   Grant funds will be used to fund Medication Assisted Recovery Services (MARS) scholarships for low-income women who are pregnant or parenting while addicted to opiates.  The grant will cover the expense of 2 to 3 women who need MARS, but cannot afford it.

Women who are addicted to opiates and pregnant or parenting are a priority population for MARS, because addiction affects the children of the addicted mother.  Unborn children who are exposed to opiate consumption can experience adverse affects in the womb, like birth defects.  Addiction to any substance can lead to bad choices and neglect.  Treating women with opiate addiction helps both the mother and her children.

Medication-Assisted Recovery for individuals with opiate addiction requires methadone treatments.  Methadone is a synthetic opiate that helps stabilize patients against withdrawal while blocking the effects of drugs like heroin and morphine. With the help of medical professionals and a treatment plan, methadone doses can help individuals stop their pattern of substance abuse. According to the California Society of Addiction Medicine, methadone maintenance is associated with a success rate of 60 – 90 percent.
