Jan. 29, 2013 - PRLog -- Sport has long been sewn into the fabric of British life. For hundreds of years, British citizens have enjoyed playing sports such as football, cricket and the Eton wall game. Such sports have long been considered beneficial to the mental and physical welfare of the participants. Sports are great exercise and can help those who enjoy them, improve their health. Furthermore, the social aspect of sports means that youngsters are encouraged to participate to improve their interaction skills.

However, many sports can contain a risk of injury. The physical nature of such sports means that contact is readily and regularly made between participants. For the most part, this does not contain any danger but on the rare occasion it does it can be devastating. If the conditions are not perfect or one of the participants acts in a reckless manner, then an injury may follow.

Many people believe that injuries in sports are just an accepted part of the environment. Members of the so-called ‘old school’ will enthuse that an injury is a ‘rite of passage’ and part and parcel of the game. But, if an injury has been caused by the negligence of another party then the sufferer may be entitled to make an injury compensation claim.

In 2006, West Ham United and England football Dean Ashton was injured whilst training with the England national team by team mate Shaun Wright Phillips. Ashton never recovered from the injury accrued and retired at the age of 26 in 2009. This cut short what was considered by many to be a promising and lucrative career. Subsequently the Football Association was forced to pay compensation to Ashton who can no longer play football.

Another cause for injuries in sport is insufficient and unsafe playing conditions and facilities. Poor conditions can lead to a participant becoming endangered. Poor playing surfaces could force a player to injure themselves due to a fall or a twist in the ankle/leg/knee. If the authority responsible for the conditions are found guilty of negligence then they may be liable to a claim made by the affected party and a no win, no fee solicitor.
