Activist, Blogger, Problem Solver Don Allen in the race for Chairman of the Minnesota GOP

Don Allen will be the first African American in history to run for the Minnesota GOP Chair. When he wins, he will be the first African American ever to hold the position in Minnesota. Could this be what the Republican Party needs for an image change?

No stranger to controversy online and off, Don Allen: veteran, student at Hamline University and editor-in-chief of the very popular civil rights blogs The Independent Business News Network, Black Politics in Minneapolis, USA Radical Black, and contributor to CNN’s iReport says he has the right stuff with an unwavering commitment to get results and quality out of a much needed revamped Republican Party of Minnesota.

In 2008 Don Allen was the campaign manager for Minnesota GOP endorsed candidate Barb Davis White who ran unsuccessfully against incumbent congressman Keith Ellison (MN5-D). (2008 was the same year the RNC was held in Saint Paul.) Of his experience, Allen made the following comments: “Republicans tell people of color, especially blacks, it was them who freed the slaves.  This is an unfortunate talking point when history shows slavery evolved into other forms of setbacks today including but not limited to high black unemployment rates, lack of economic opportunities and an educational system that was never intended to teach students of color. In order for Minnesota’s Republican Party to get back in the game, we need a coach who is also a general manager.”

Allen says he is a leader, visionary, innovator, activist, risk-taker, and entrepreneur with a track record of success that spans more than three decades. He concludes, “This is what the Minnesota GOP needs the most - someone like me that will unpack the tools needed and make sure the back-work gets done.”

“I think its time for the Minnesota GOP to focus on Minnesota versus lobbing insults at Washington, DC and America’s first black president; its not a good look. President Obama has successfully won the presidency twice while kicking our butts. Lets take a closer look at Minnesota’s 4th and 5th congressional districts and look for a win rather than nursing lambs being sent to a political slaughter,” says Allen.

In a social media launch for his campaign for the people, Allen wrote the following letter:

Dear State Delegates, Members and potential members (the people) of the Republican Party of Minnesota, Elected Officials and Senate Districts:

I can’t say this a traditional run for a chairmanship that is free of controversy, debate - but rather it is one generated with a concern to find common ground among segmented groups within the party and work towards a cohesion and some wins inside and outside the Republican Party of Minnesota.

The Minnesota GOP is at a critical point. We can no longer let great Republican candidates- endorsed and otherwise- walk into political combat zones, armed with nothing but empty talking points and a lack of knowledge concerning the issues facing the diverse communities of Minnesota.

The Minnesota GOP no longer has the option of working in a silo of isolation and benign neglect with regard to the various racial groups and ethnic communities that might be on the verge of making a different political choice.  We can no longer work against our own - eating our young before they have the opportunity to learn, grow and be prosperous.

The Republican Party of Minnesota and its elected officials must start to engage a broader base of constituents.  This begins by seeking to change the perceived stigma about what it is to be a Republican in Minnesota. The MN GOP, without pointing any blame has not communicated the right signs, symbols or signals important in political interpersonal communications. Going through the motions is not an option when intentional effective communications is important. This is not a game; this is real work – hard work that needs to be done immediately. The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary.

A great Republican once said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy,” (King, Jr.). The Minnesota GOP other conservative groups, including the ever-faithful Ron Paul supporters, the Minnesota Tea Party, the Minnesota Conservatives, and Log Cabin Republicans, don’t always have the same views - this has led to a gap in logic and constructive public discourse. More importantly, it has made it very easy for our long time supporters to walk away.

We need to look no further than history to see those who attack us from within often overlook the freedoms granted to us by the constitution.  As said by Margaret Chase Smith in a speech delivered on June 1, 1950, “Those of us who shout the loudest about Americanism in making character assassinations are all too frequently those who, by our own words and acts, ignore some of the basic principles of Americanism: The right to criticize; The right to hold unpopular beliefs; The right to protest; The right of independent thought.”

It’s a new day – and a new time. It is time to make history, not just for our party –but more importantly for the people of Minnesota…all people.

Today, I ask for your support as I seek the position of Chairman of the Minnesota GOP.

-Thank you, Don Allen

Don Allen invites you to support his campaign and asks everyone, no matter of political affiliations to support him by clicking “LIKE” on the campaigns Facebook page. Allen says, “This is an uphill battle. Today’s GOP is not the Republican Party of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - I expect the worst to turn into the best.”
