As the most decorated rider in ice oval racing, P.J. Wanderscheid (http://www.amsoilracing.com/Racers/PJWanderscheid.aspx) has won almost everything, including multiple class championships, two Canadian Power Toboggan Championships and an unprecedented fourAMSOIL World Championships (http://www.amsoilracing.com/Series/AMSOILWorldChampionshipDerby.aspx). What’s he’s never done, however, is win a race on a broken ankle. A crash in Amherst, Wis. just two weeks ago knocked number 28 from competition and threatened to derail his season. However, the Sauk Centre, Minn. native hasn’t become a champion by quitting. As he tells AMSOIL Racing, he’ll be in Eagle River for this biggest race of the year.

AMSOIL Racing: Tell us what happened to your ankle?

Wanderscheid: I was racing in Amherst in the first heat race of the day, and I went to wipe off my shield going down the back stretch. We had the sled setup a little aggressive in the front end and it pulled the handlebars out of my hand and sent me feet-first into the hay bales.

AMSOIL Racing: Have you be able to ride since the injury?

Wanderscheid: I have not been on my sled since. I just have a soft cast on right now because of the swelling, so once I get a hard cast put on I will attempt getting back on the sled and see how it goes.

AMSOIL Racing: You’ve accomplished quite a bit in your career, but have you ever raced with a broken ankle?

Wanderscheid: I have never raced with a broken ankle. Yet! I plan to do so in Eagle River for the World Championships.

AMSOIL Racing: What kinds of adjustments will you need to make to your sled and your riding style?

Wanderscheid: We will be adding a place for my leg to sit on the sled and also lots of padding in that area. It won’t be a huge adjustment because I don’t really use my right ankle much with racing so it was kind of a blessing it was the right ankle and not the left.

AMSOIL Racing: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career to this point?

Wanderscheid: This will definitely be one of the biggest challenges in my career. I have had some other injuries to overcome, but had more time to overcome them. I hope it will not be a huge adjustment and want to be able to perform like it never happened.

AMSOIL Racing: One of the richest purses in ice oval racing history is up for grabs in Eagle River. Honestly, how much have you thought about it?

Wanderscheid: That was one of the first thoughts in my head when I stood up and felt me ankle was hurt. The team and I work so hard for this race and we want to perform well at that race. The prize money would be great, but we will set that aside; we want to make history.

AMSOIL Racing: What would winning a fifth AMSOIL World Championship mean to you and your team?

Wanderscheid: It would mean a dream come true. I know it will not be easy, and it won't be any easier with the injury, but I feel we have a good chance at the race. One thing I can tell you: Our entire team, including myself, will be giving it 100 percent.
