Jan. 8, 2013 - PRLog -- The Friday Night Football Projects has been run for the past 18 months by the Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service with support from Liverpool based web comparison service yoursuresave.com.

The project, which attracted 30 - 40 youngsters each and every Friday evening to Starr Fields, Dingle Lane in Liverpool 8, was a great benefit to those that took part and the local community.

As well as improving fitness in the youngsters, both male and female, it gave the firefighters and youngsters a chance to meet each other and as a consequence instances of fire lighting reduced by half and anti-social behaviour reduced by a large margin.

Roy Stewart, who is the MF&RS Football Team Manager and a firefighter, said: “Our presence in the area has had a really positive effect with a lot of young people taking part in sport on the Fridays.

"We’ve a squad of nearly 30 players who turn out for MF&RS Football Teams and we are all fortunate to be in a great job and still enjoying everything that playing football can bring.

"So it wasn’t difficult to persuade the squad to support the project, especially once we’d got to know some of the kids and they know us. Between 6pm and 9pm every Friday we get about 30 to 40 young people here and because of the success of the project we get the most when the weather is the worst.

He added: “The ability of some of them is incredible but our challenge has been to encourage some of those who perhaps don’t play regularly or for teams to keep at it, show respect to each other and always keep smiling. We’ve had great support from the Fire Authority and more recently from our Club sponsors Yoursuresave.com.

“This year we have the prospect of being part of the new Toxteth Fire Fit Hub which has been built in Toxteth and we hope to start a new project up there but as with all long-term projects, funding will be key.”
