Nov. 5, 2012 - PRLog -- San Francisco, CA- The interior design sector has seen dramatic shifts in the last 20 years.

Flowery decorations no longer overshadow and downplay the role of interior design. Modern industry embraces the role of the industry professional to that is charged with creating a more aesthetically and practically pleasing living space.

By shifting the public away from the “decorator” title, the shift in attitude across the design sector is focused less on a prima facie effect of ‘decorating’. Instead, the more psychological effects of design are focused on in a more robust type, rather than on a purely aesthetic one. While designer and decorator are often linked in concept, the value of a designer runs much deeper than a mere decorator. The power of influence on an individual entering a space becomes of paramount importance to the quality designer.

The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) was committed and focused to the concept at the first annual state of the Industry address at the National Press Club in Washington D.C.
Vice President CEO Randy Fiser stated that the industry and public demand by the public for interior design work goes beyond developing a “pleasant container for people and things.”

“Just as improved product design transformed the IT industry, more thoughtful interior design is benefiting companies, institutions and government agencies that recognize its impact on people, productivity and performance,” he says.

Healthcare design that impacts both stay length and general positive healing were cited by Fiser. He stated that design garners greater productivity and fosters collaboration in office designs when implemented properly. He also stated that retail design could convey strong branding impacts to help items stand out.

“Just as improved product design transformed the IT industry, more thoughtful interior design is benefiting companies, institutions and government agencies that recognize its impact on people, productivity and performance,” he says.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics suggests that interior design employment has dropped significantly since 2008. The 25% drop is likely due to the fact many individuals and businesses must tighten their pocketbooks in order to offset overall financial loss and future uncertainties.
