What to Do if You Suspect Asbestos in Your Home Discussed in New Online Video
The IAQ Video Network releases another educational video about industrial hygiene, indoor air quality (IAQ), pathogens or toxins.
Most products made today do not contain asbestos. However, until the 1970s, many types of building products and insulation materials used in homes contained asbestos. Exposure to asbestos fibers is known to cause serious health hazards including mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung cancer.
“You cannot tell whether a material contains asbestos simply by looking at it with the naked eye,” reported Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates, the company behind the IAQ Video Network and the new public outreach video. “Homeowners who suspect materials may contain asbestos should treat the material as such or have it sampled and analyzed by a qualified professional. A professional should take samples for analysis, since a professional knows what to look for, and because there may be an increased health risk if fibers are released by someone taking samples who do not know what they are doing. We hope this video helps to educate people about exposure risks due to asbestos in their homes.”
