Sittingbourne Granny is a winner on two continents

Lyn De La Haye, 55, from Sittingbourne, has been voted Granny of the Month by Grannynet, the community-based website for grandmothers.

Nov. 2, 2012 - PRLog -- She was nominated by daughter Charley for being a very special Nan to her five grandchildren, Megan, 10, Bethany, 9, Christopher, 7, Elliot, 16 months and one year old Jake.

But what makes Lyn extra special is that she is also called Granny by the children she teaches in a school in Kampala, Uganda.

Daughter Charley said: “I put my Mum’s name forward in the competition because I think she is amazing the way she manages to juggle being a grandmother to her grandchildren in this country as well as helping under privileged children in Uganda.”

Lyn originally went out to Uganda in March 2007 with husband David for just six months with an organisation called Mission Direct, to be in charge of teams of people who came out to Africa for two weeks at a time, helping to build a school in Rukungiri in the South West of the country.

Then they saw a need to make a difference to the way education was taught. “It was still done by rote, in the way I was taught at school!” says Lyn.  So after a quick trip back to the UK for three months to sort everything out,  in 2008 they moved back to live in Uganda and spent three years working with a local vocational centre.  Then, they decided to move to the capital, Kampala, in August 2010.

Lyn got a job at Taibah Primary school, where she started working in a department that had just two classes, four staff and 12 children. After two years they now have four classes, about 70 children and eight teachers.

Lyn’s family is looking forward to welcoming her back to spend Christmas back in Sittingbourne, with her parents, children and grandchildren at home.

Grannies from all over the country are being nominated by family and friends each month throughout the year, leading up to one very special grandmother being awarded the title Grannynet and Infacol’s Granny of the Year in April 2013.

Each month the winning granny is treated to a prize for being so special. The overall winner of the Grannynet and Infacol Granny of the Year Award will win a break at Enid Blyton’s favourite hotel, Knoll House in Dorset.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

Grannynet was founded in 2007 by Verity Gill when her life was turned upside down by the arrival of her baby daughter. As she looked for help and guidance from her own mother, she realised what an important part a grandmother plays in the life of their grandchild.

Starting with a forum for grandparents to exchange stories and compare notes on their grandchildren, Grannynet quickly developed to provide advice and articles to help them support their children and grandchildren in all sorts of ways. Today, Grannynet provides a friendly and informative support network for grandparents all over the UK with their membership total recently hitting 4000 grannies.

The Grannynet & Infacol Granny of the Year Award will be presented at a special ceremony by TV and radio presenter Gloria Hunniford who says: “The love, support and reassurance of grandparents is an essential part of the parenting process and it’s only right that we should celebrate them.”
