The storm took out most of the boardwalks up and down the Jersey shore along with major flooding, including lower Manhatten. Expect lower volumes in the market the first 2-3 days when it reopens. Many people are still struggling to get power restored in many areas of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. Right now the focus is not on the markets, but survival, assessing and fixing damage. There are several opportunities in the market this storm has created. Look at several of the home stores along with the property & casualty insurance companies. These type of companies seem to be beneficiaries of these disasters. The Presidential Election is next week and expect that to re-dominate the news by Thursday and Friday. This will be a photo finish and expect the results to be late on election night. We had expected the markets to push higher throughout October and although it started out strong, the markets pulled back with Corporate Earnings. Overall the earnings announcements have been mixed while guidance has been muted and many have revised expectations downward. Several companies have cited "uncertainty" We expect there to be movement immediately following the election in the markets. We would not recommend adding to any growth or speculative positions until the elections are over and possible the Fiscal Cliff discussions have picked up again with serious intent.
