DEATH VALLEY JIM TO EMBARK ON 15 DAY, 150 MILE EXPEDITION ACROSS THE LENGTH OF DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

34 year old Author / Explorer / Historian / Guide Jim Mattern, aka Death Valley Jim will embark on a solo 150 mile expedition across the length of Death Valley National Park beginning on January 1st 2013. The expedition is anticipated to take 15 days. Jim will begin the expedition from the most northern boarder of the park in the Lookout Mountain Range, and end along route 127 between Shoshone, CA and Baker, CA.

Jim will survive on a minimal food supply during the expedition which consists of twenty pounds of Carnivore Candy Beef Jerky, five pounds of Bigs Sunflower Seeds, and five pounds of Somersault Snacks. Eighteen gallons of water will be dropped at undisclosed locations along the planned route. In addition Jim will utilize Honey Stinger Organic Energy Gel as an all natural energy booster.

Over the course of the expedition Jim will have no ability to communicate with the outside world with the exception of a satellite beacon that will track his progress regularly across Death Valley. Additionally, the beacon can be used to send a simple check in message allowing for followers to see an “all is well” or “need help” notification. The beacon can also be used to send a message to emergency rescue teams if a major emergency presents itself. A map with the ability to track Jim's progress will be made available at Jim's expedition website: www.mojavedesertadventure.com

Jim has scheduled a three day trial expedition starting on November 5th and ending on November 7th which will take him 40+ miles through the El Paso Mountains, Rand Mountains, and ending in the small desert community of California City, CA (also his town of residence). The purpose of the trial expedition is to allow him the opportunity to see what sort of obstacles he may face on the much longer trek to take place in January, and give him the chance to improve the currently laid plan.

Jim is no stranger to Death Valley or the Mojave Desert. He has been exploring the region for nearly 5 years. He created the website Deathvalleyjim.com in the summer of 2011 to share history and his findings of Ghost Towns, Native American sites, and other places of interest in the desert. In a short time the website began receiving thousands of visitors per month. In 2012 he authored and published his first book entitled, “Secret Places in the Mojave Desert.” Volume two of the book will be available by the end of this year. Jim is also the Associate Editor of Dezert Magazine, and has had regular articles in the 29 Palms, CA based Sun Runner Magazine.
